FAQ
Site Registration
I registered but haven’t been granted publishing privileges yet… what gives?
Within a few minutes after completing the registration form you should have gotten an email with your login info and a confirmation link. You need to click that confirmation link in order to complete your registration. After that’s done I will upgrade your account so you can post on this site.
If you didn’t get that email, it’s possible you may have typed your email address wrong, or the email may have wound up in your spam folder. Only one registration per email address is allowed, so if you try to re-register and your email is already in the system, the confirmation email is probably buried in your spam graveyard.
Why do I have to be a developer in order to post on this site?
‘Cuz if you’re not a developer you don’t have a vested interest in playing by my rules. And because I say so! I don’t foresee this changing in the future, but never say never.
Using the Site
I’m registered and upgraded. How the hell do I post something?
In the far-right sidebar, look for the section near the bottom labeled “Meta” and click on Log In. In the Wordpress dashboard, look for “Posts” in the left column and click it, then click “Add New”.
How do I use Wordpress?
Ummm… if you’re completely new to publishing blog posts in Wordpress I’d recommend doing some test posts. Don’t publish them, just fool around and preview them. This will give you a chance to experiment with uploading images, creating image galleries, and embedding video.
I’ve also put up a help page that will hopefully get you moving in the right direction.
Wordpress also has a ton of documentation at codex.wordpress.org in case you’re intent on mastering every aspect of the platform.
I posted a screenshot gallery but the images are screwed up…?
Some file formats display correctly in Safari but not in other browsers. Please use GIF or JPG and you won’t have problems.
If I screw up and violate one of your “DO NOT” items, are you gonna ban me automatically?
I would only do an automatic ban if something looks like it was blatantly and deliberately done, such as posting your 300×250 ad and linking it to iTunes. Big no-no!!
If you forget to tag or accidentally miscategorize I may just fix it myself. If it becomes a chronic issue, then I’ll email you and ask you to start fixing your own mistakes.
Regarding the “Do not post anything that even remotely resembles spam” rule, keep in mind that this site’s entire purpose is for you to promote your App Store wares. If your app is on sale, by all means title your post “(app name) is on sale for $.99″ or whatever.
Can you clarify that rule about not posting “spam”?
Things that “resemble spam” would, in my mind, be pretty obvious and extremely annoying.
A few examples that come to mind:
- Publishing very similar posts day after day just to be on the front page
- Formatting your posts with obnoxiously huge and/or colored fonts
- Trying to hijack other people’s posts by dropping multiple links in the comment box
There are probably more dirty tricks that haven’t surfaced (and hopefully never will) so we’ll just have to see what happens and shoot the bad things down when necessary. Just use your best judgment, and if you’re not sure about something you’re welcome to contact me.
Is there a limit to how much or how often I can post?
Not really. If you have 10 apps in the App Store, it’s ok to write them up as 10 different posts even if it’s on the same day. Going forward, though, I would expect every post to have a reason behind it such as an update announcement, a sale announcement, or even a non-promotional thought on App Store/iTunes/iPhone/etc. issues in general. Again, use your best judgment and if you’re doing it in earnest you’ll probably be ok.
How do I get on your Blogroll?
Easy! Link back to this site and you’re in. Please use this format…
Link text: iPhone App Index
Alt text: iPhone App Index.com
Link URL: http://www.iphoneappindex.com/
…and then go to the Trade Links page to send me your link.
I’m also open to trading links with non-developer sites that are iPhone-related
Oh crap, I lost my password…
Fear not, there’s a password recovery page. It requires your username or email address.
